Buffalo Station to Wingina
Distance: 7.5 Miles
Duration: 4 – 5 hours
Join us on a float if you are wanting to maximize your Nelson County, VA experience. Meeting at the JRWMA or Wingina public boat ramp parking lot, we will shuttle you by bus upstream. Both of these trips are good for all experience levels, with a mixture of flatwater, and mild class I & II rapids.
Wingina to JRWMA – Starting from Hwy 56 bridge the river at the beginning of the trip is wide with a gentle flow, allowing you time to become comfortable with the handling of the canoe. During the middle section of the trip you will pass a large island on the right while navigating a series of small ledges creating the class I & II rapids. Immediately after the large island there will be a few small beaches on the right, which are great places to stop for a picnic. After the beaches you will have a short flatwater float to the JRWMA boat ramp located on the left bank, where you arrive back at your vehicle.
Buffalo Station to Wingina– For a longer day on the river, the 7.5 mile trip starts on the Nelson County side, across from the James River State Park. When you pass the confluence of the Tye River on your left there is a fun Class II rapid. You will then pass several beaches suitable for a picnic. The remainder of the float is a mixture of flatwater and Class I & II rapids. The take out is on the left bank, under the large Hwy 56 bridge, where you arrive back at your vehicle.
Custom Trips – We can also customize a trip for you depending on water levels of the local tributaries – The Tye, Piney and Rockfish Rivers.
